Asia’s largest toll plaza flooded with Chinese New Year traffic

Thousands of vehicles passed through the 36-lane Wuzhuang Toll Station in Chuzhou on Friday night as families travelled for the 2026 Spring Festival.

Drone footage showed steady traffic through the toll plaza, widely considered Asia’s largest. The toll station is a vital link between Shanghai, Jiangsu, and inland provinces, which has previously seen 24-hour jams.

This year, unlike the frantic gridlock of previous years, the ‘Year of the Horse’ rush has staggered, easing congestion as continuous streams of headlights and taillights marked a steady two-way flow on the G40 expressway.

Authorities have forecast a record 9.5 billion inter-regional trips over the 40-day period, with around 80 percent being self-drive. To cope, the Chinese government has waived all motorway tolls for small passenger vehicles from the evening of February 15 to February 23.
