Thousands of residents across Orange County, California, were forced to evacuate after authorities warned that a massive chemical tank at a GKN Aerospace facility in Garden Grove could potentially explode or leak toxic chemicals, triggering a major emergency response operation.
The crisis began after a storage tank containing methyl methacrylate (MMA) — a highly flammable chemical used in plastics manufacturing — started overheating, raising fears of a catastrophic blast or hazardous chemical release. Officials said nearly 40,000 to 50,000 residents across multiple cities, including Garden Grove, Anaheim, Cypress, Stanton, Buena Park and Westminster, were placed under evacuation orders as emergency crews worked around the clock to contain the threat.
Firefighters and hazardous materials teams have been continuously spraying water on the unstable tank to reduce pressure and temperature levels, while federal and state agencies closely monitor air quality and surrounding neighborhoods. Authorities warned that exposure to MMA could cause severe respiratory irritation, eye irritation, dizziness and other health complications if released into the atmosphere.
In a key development, Orange County fire officials said crews discovered a “potential crack” in the tank that may be naturally relieving pressure inside, reducing the immediate risk of a massive explosion. Officials, however, cautioned that the situation remains dangerous and highly unpredictable, with emergency operations continuing through the weekend.
California Governor Gavin Newsom declared a state of emergency as evacuation shelters filled up and residents spent the Memorial Day weekend away from their homes. Legal action has also reportedly begun against GKN Aerospace, with affected residents alleging disruption, health risks and emotional distress caused by the ongoing chemical emergency.
