🚗🚋Minami 1-jō dōri (South 1 Avenue)
Minami 1-jō dōri runs east–west through the heart of Sapporo, just one block south of Odori Park. In the early Meiji era it was known as Oshima-dōri and is regarded as the very starting point of the city’s development, the place where some of Sapporo’s first townhouses were built. Today its central stretch is one of the city’s most established shopping districts, with long-standing department stores and specialty shops near the Tanukikōji arcade, and it glows with illuminations during the winter season. Further west, the section from around Nishi-18-chōme toward Maruyama Park is nicknamed “Maruyama Urasandō,” a stylish street of cafes and restaurants where you can also feel the greenery of Hokkaido Shrine and Maruyama Park.
🪨Ishiyama-dōri (Route 230)
Ishiyama-dōri is one of Sapporo’s main arterial roads, running north–south along the western side of the city. Its origins go back to the “Honganji Road,” opened in 1870 by monks of Higashi Honganji, and the name “Ishiyama” (literally “stone mountain”) comes from the stone quarrying that began in the area in the Meiji period. As part of National Route 230, the road links central Sapporo with the Ishiyama district in the south and continues on toward Jōzankei hot springs and the Nakayama Pass, forming a key route into southern Hokkaido.
