“A DOOR POPPED OPEN!” American Airlines Pilot Declares Emergency After Takeoff
American Airlines Flight 2284 was forced to return to Charlotte on August 29 after the crew was told that an access door near the front of the aircraft had popped open during takeoff. The flight was headed from Charlotte to Puerto Plata, Dominican Republic, when the pilots began running checklists and making calls to determine what to do next. When ATC asked how much fuel they planned to burn before returning, the pilot made it clear they weren’t going to wait. “We’re not gonna worry about burning gas,” he said, explaining that they would instead make an overweight landing, which meant the flight would be treated as an emergency aircraft. AAL2284 returned safely to Charlotte, where the pilots said they would head back to the gate so maintenance could inspect the aircraft and determine what happened.
