Passenger Refuses To Leave Bathroom Before Landing: “We Have To Declare A Medical Emergency”

A United Airlines flight found itself dealing with an unusual medical situation when a passenger reportedly locked themselves inside the aircraft lavatory and refused to come out, even as the flight prepared to land. According to ATC audio, the crew told controllers the passenger had spent a significant portion of the flight in the bathroom and was declining medical assistance, making it difficult for them to determine exactly what was wrong. The pilot explained that the issue may have involved kidney stones or another urinary-related medical problem, but said the passenger was providing very little information. As the aircraft neared its destination, the crew warned that if the passenger remained inside the lavatory during landing, they could be forced to declare a medical emergency. Controllers immediately arranged for medical personnel to meet the aircraft at the gate as the unusual situation continued to unfold.
