“We Don’t Wanna Take Any Chances!” FedEx Pilot Declares Emergency

A FedEx flight declared an emergency after the crew reported a possible battery fire and told ATC they needed to get on the ground without delay. FedEx Flight 1376 was approaching the airport when the pilot asked to keep their speed up, but ATC initially warned that they were catching another aircraft ahead and would need to either slow down or be turned away. The pilot made it clear that neither option was ideal, telling the controller, “Our battery might be on fire,” before declaring an emergency and requesting to go straight in for Runway 27. The crew reported they had lost their battery, and the pilot revealed he had experienced a similar electrical issue before that turned out to be a battery fire, adding, “We don’t wanna take any chances.” ATC immediately gave the FedEx flight priority, moving another aircraft out of the way so the emergency aircraft could maintain its speed and head directly toward the airport. Three people were reported on board.
