“We’re Declaring an Emergency” — Blue Streak 5474 Reports Landing Gear Problem @AmericanAirlines

Blue Streak Flight 5474 declares an emergency while approaching Milwaukee after experiencing a landing gear issue.

The pilots tell ATC that although the landing gear is now indicating down, they want someone on the ground to visually verify the gear before attempting the landing.

ATC offers the crew a low approach past the tower so controllers can inspect the aircraft from the ground. The pilots agree, take several minutes to prepare, and then proceed with the approach.

After landing on Runway 25L, the aircraft stops temporarily while airport emergency vehicles inspect it to make sure everything is safe before the crew continues taxiing.

It’s a great example of aviation’s layered safety approach: even when cockpit indications suggest the landing gear is down, the crew takes the additional precaution of getting an external visual confirmation.
