France Imposes Curfews After Nationwide Cost-of-Living and Education Protests
The French government has imposed curfews in multiple cities after large-scale protests over education funding and the cost of living caused millions of euros in losses, thousands of arrests, and hundreds of injuries. Interior Minister Laurent Nunez offered to resign over intelligence and policing failures, but President Macron rejected it. Curfews were imposed in Paris (11 PM–6 AM around Place de la République and Les Halles), Lille and three other northern cities (8 PM–6 AM), and Marseille (public gatherings banned noon–8 PM), while Nice restricted movement for minors in the city center, and Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu stated the curfews would be extended “where necessary” without ruling out a state of emergency.
